While the Ducorps Cockatoo may not be as loud as some of the larger Cockatoos, they are still not apartment pets. Loudness: Cockatoos are among the loudest of the parrot species, so if you’re sensitive to noise we would suggest looking into other types of parrots. For this reason, we suggest these birds only if you have ample time to devote to them, and are not afraid of receiving an occasional nip from your bird. As with all birds, fear can sometimes lead to biting. It has been said that these Cockatoos tend to act more like African Greys, and are more easily spooked than other Cockatoos. Something to keep in mind when considering a Ducorps Cockatoo as a pet is their ability to bite. Ducorps Cockatoos will typically develop a small vocabulary of 5 or 6 of their favorite words and phrases. Ducorps can learn to speak, but are often difficult to understand. After around two months, the noise and crying just stops. This is, unfortunately, normal, so be aware that you will need to deal with this noise for around two months. After weaning, it is common for these cockatoos to retain their fairly obnoxious baby cry for up to two months. For this reason, we recommend a large variety of toys and plenty of supervision during play time. Anything and everything is a toy to them – especially if you don’t want them to have it. They are extremely playful and acrobatic. If you are unable to devote at least 3 hours of quality time to your parrot each day, then a Ducorps Cockatoo is not for you. Although the Ducorps Cockatoo is slightly more independent than other Cockatoos, they still need a lot of attention. Arguably, these parrots are among the most affectionate animals on the planet! This is wonderful at first, but they quickly become like needy two year olds, craving constant attention and companionship. Trainability: Domestic hand-fed babies make excellent pet birds for dedicated caregivers. The darker the iris, the more likely it is to be male. After they have reached maturity (typically around 5 years of age) the females will retain a brown iris, while the males will turn almost black. Sexing: The sexes differ only in eye color, though all juvenile birds will appear to be female. However, their crest is significantly smaller than that of other Cockatoos, and resembles a shark’s fin rather than a large headdress. Like other Cockatoos, they have a crest which will pop up when they are startled or excited. They are entirely white, except for a bit of yellow under their wings. These are small Cockatoos – only slightly larger than a Goffin’s Cockatoo. ![]()
